My art practice is grounded in painting and printmaking. I am interested in the ideas surrounding colour, the everyday, and the female gaze. I use both of these mediums to explore these subjects in different ways.
My paintings are rooted in my meditations on colour, and the pure emotions that can be drawn out through their use. I find myself captivated by the colour of the sky, acting as a sea of abstract colour spread across an expansive plane. The degree to which the sky changes colour will never cease to captivate my imagination. I think that there is freedom in the fact that no matter where I am, I still have the sky above me. In my paintings, I hope to convey this feeling. I am interested in using subjects of the everyday and landscapes, to create paintings that have active colours in both positive and negative space. By making both the positive and negative space compete for dominance, the viewer is constantly drawn to different areas of colour within the painting. Forms that are at first recognizable become lost to the larger idea of colour relationships, and the viewer can begin to appreciate the beauty of these colours rather than the formal elements that first drew them into the painting. I hope to inspire positive emotions in the viewer, akin to my own feelings generated by the colours I am using.
In my printmaking practice as a whole, I am interested in exploring feminist themes through the use of etching. I like to explore ideas of identity, family, and the everyday.
Frequently, the subjects of my etchings are the people that surround me in my everyday life. I often find myself depicting people that are in the midst of everyday activities, such eating, drinking, or doing menial activities. I also use my work to look inwards, and explore aspects of my female identity. I use myself as reference to explore larger ideas of the depiction of the female form. My work “In the Mirror” shows a reflection of myself as I look into the mirror and apply mascara, which aims to explore the idea of “getting ready” as a woman. Through my work I hope to capture the calm and beautiful moments present in everyday life.
Overall, I aim to use the subject matter of the everyday to explore larger more abstract ideas of colour and the female gaze in my work.
