Painted ladies, gentlemen and pampered poodles inhabit a world of impeccable manners, all part of the social theatre. They perform their parts with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Conformity looks like good taste, obedience like good breeding. Nobody appears to be forcing them. They have learned to watch themselves: each a self-warden.
The monster doesn’t necessarily arrive looking monstrous. Sometimes it arrives well dressed, knows the rules, and is very good at behaving.
