Japanese Connection Stories is a photographic series exploring the lasting impact of the forced dispersal and internment of Japanese Canadians during and after the Second World War. In its aftermath, many families assimilated into Canadian society, relinquishing much of their cultural identity to avoid further persecution.
Tanaka, a fourth-generation Japanese Canadian, approaches this series as a journey toward understanding her own sense of cultural loss. Through portraits and accompanying narratives, she engages family members across generations in reflecting on their enduring cultural connections and how these relationships continue to shape their identities today.
Heritage is an active, ongoing dialogue.
Tanaka hopes to inspire others to reflect on their own cultural connections.
