Murray –  An Exhibition of A Life’s Work: Murray McKay – March 5 – 16, 2025

Opening Reception: Thursday March 6 –

Beloved Murray McKay modelled for many artists in Toronto and is fondly remembered. His recent passing in 2024 touched many people, and this exhibition celebrates his dedication to posing even when he was not well. With its many artists, this exhibition attempts to mark the impact that Murray had on the art community. We hope you will come celebrate his legacy with us.

I loved Murray in his pre-Toronto years; we shared an apartment in Winnipeg one winter and hitch-hiked together. He was straight and I was gay; he was my friend and (unrequited) love. I remember hitching together north to Minetonas, and spending the night in the same bed in his parents’ mobile home; his mother with her endless dark eyes, like his. His dad cricket-like, extroverted, simple in the best sense. We went our separate ways, but I’ve never really left him behind, that slow cautious but knowing smile, his incredibly lean body, his strange silence. His choice of poverty. He was a gift. He was beautiful.
