‘The Pain of Old Wounds’ questions the ways we form relationships to the subjects of photographs. Photographs are brutal objects as photography is a brutal medium; it extracts detail and identity, freezes and crystallizes a moment for future examination and unlike other artforms, photography requires the direct entanglement of the artist with a subject.

This exhibition seeks to explore the ways the artist might reconcile with the brutality of photography; interrogating the means by which we express brutal subject matter within an image, and focuses on the essential tension between what is recorded in an image and how an image records.
