Like most during the mandated shutdown, I faced an unexpected pause. I cooked more, drank more, and pondered more. I managed the sudden abundance of time by taking long walks and exploring the eerily deserted landscape. After many months and three seasons, things slowly starting to reopen, but now we have entered a second wave and isolation looms near again. I am grateful to have had my camera to record the quiet moments that I witnessed amidst the unfolding chaos.
Wandering alone has been surprisingly cathartic—all senses heightened by the unusual absence of humans. Without the urban din, I’m able to hear the birds, the wind, and the distant sirens. There is a post-apocalyptic feeling on the empty streets. Fences, walls, and barricades seem strangely out of place or without purpose, and lonely objects given a voice. Light and shadow add to the story. Texture and shape give dimension to the tale.
This collection of images is my attempt to describe my journey through these unprecedented times.
