Emmette Lewis – Holistic Beauty – Oct 28 – Nov 8

Holistic Beauty is a representation of anomalous faces and diverse features through conceptual portraiture. This exhibit highlights unconventional adaptations of beauty and challenges societal standards of what is perceived as perfect. Each portrait study carries a personalized background that illustrates the individual and portrays their exclusive character and nature. Too often we look at a portrait and simply see a beautiful face, separate from ourselves, isolated from connecting to the viewer. Holistic Beauty challenges that concept and looks beyond the portrait to see the artwork as a whole, to see the expression, the individual; to look at the canvas and detach the concept of “beautiful portraiture.” Each piece emphasizes the femme and honours features that are unorthodox and irregular. Using a multitude of bright, disordered colours, shapes and moods the portrait transforms and reflects a variety of expressions. Holistic Beauty represents self, community, body, worth and power without holding attachments to sexuality, race, gender and traditional values. This exhibit asks you to see beyond the face and question who it is, who is behind the figure, how do you see them?
