About: OffCamera 2020 Virtual Art Exhibition
Amidst Mass Film Industry Layoffs, Visual Artists Take Their Work Online With a Virtual Art Exhibition
With the ongoing state of emergency in effect due to the Covid – 19 pandemic, artists have been challenged to seek new outlets for sharing their art with the public. Toronto Film union IATSE Local 873 is thrilled to announce OffCamera 2020 Virtual Art Exhibition, featuring works of over 50 visual artists working in the film industry.
The OffCamera 2020 Virtual Art Exhibition was live from July 7th – 28th, 2020. The Interactive Live Reception occurred on Thursday, July 16th, 6:00 – 9:00 pm. and it was be a chance to virtually meet the artists, get a glimpse into their art studios, and ask questions about art and film while celebrating together at a safe distance.

The visual artists featured in OffCamera are the creatives behind numerous Hollywood film productions such as the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water, as well as the Emmy award-winning TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale, and superhero hits: Boys, Titans, and Umbrella Academy.
On March 17th, the Ontario film industry, which generated $2.6 billion dollars for the economy in 2019, came to a complete halt, leaving thousands of people across Ontario unemployed.
A portion of art sales will be donated to The AFC, a national charity with a mission to help entertainment professionals maintain their health, dignity and ability to work when they find themselves most vulnerable from illness, injury or other hardship. The AFC has provided $140,584 in Emergency Financial Assistance to IATSE 873 members in the last twelve months. Direct donations to The AFC can be made online at afchelps.ca/offcamera2020.
OffCamera is an ongoing visual art exhibition that has been produced in Toronto by IATSE 873 members since 2007. It was initiated by the late Patricia Chard (scenic member of IATSE 873) as a way to showcase the creative talent behind the scenes and off camera, but instrumental to the success of the film industry in Canada.
IATSE 873 (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 873) is Toronto’s largest film and television production union. www.iatse873.com has been generously sponsoring the OffCamera exhibitions.

Repetition is the name of the game . I’ve always have had a thing for Andy Warhols work. His fetish for celebrity and the obsession with making icons out of random things like the coke bottle.. or the the Campbells soup can is what I’m going for with this series. The poster girl is the vehicle for the message. The messages come from real posters from around the world . The original image was taken in Germany at a BLM protest. I had originally named the series American Protest Girl . I changed it when @theartof_zoe contacted me saying it was her. Calling it American protest girl didn’t feel right especially when this isn’t only an American problem it’s global. Her poster said Legalize Melanin… it is a provocative 2 word statement that really sold me on doing the series. I’ll be reproducing this image many more times and pasting them up here in the GTA. I will not be selling any of these pieces because I feel it would take away from the goal of the work . The use of bright bold colours deliver hard hitting messages from our brothers and sisters that need to be heard . It’s meant to make ppl uncomfortable… it’s meant to make ppl think .
