“I sought to construct as many iterations of the same head in altered contexts”
Captivated at first sight in 1996 by these mysterious and colossal stone heads, I sketched them, made multiple prints of one of the sketches, and combined them with botanical matter and other materials native to Mexico. I’ve used woven jute to describe the curvature of landscape in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico where I first saw these heads in the Museum of Anthropology. As well, I’ve used amate paper which is made from the bark of the fig tree in the state of Puebla. I sought to construct as many iterations of the same head in altered contexts.
