| Concerned by the unrelenting alteration of Earth’s natural rhythms, Riders on the Storm highlights the need for our awareness of the destruction of our world through natural phenomena such as super storms, tsunamis and the dying coral reef, related to human actions driven by consumerism and technology that cause climate changes. Facing this ultimately existential threat, we must alter and change ourselves … time is running out.
Hutinec believes that art can inspire us to achieve a deeper awareness focused on relationships instead of consumption and choose positive personal practices to prevent cataclysmic climate changes. “Art is not just a product, an end in itself, it is a start of a process” says Hutinec, “During the creative process I pay attention to what emerges from exploring the dynamics between self and nature, self and culture, self and ego, as viewed through multiple lenses of psychology, philosophy, and science, and this self-exploratory inner dialogue and debate continues between a viewer and the work of art.” Hutinec pushes the boundaries of pictorial representation through experimentation and play with various approaches of metaphorical self-expression. She creates expressionistic, subjective, personal artwork that conveys emotion, bursts with dynamic and sometimes chaotic rhythms of jarring colors organized by the intuitive search for an aesthetic balance. Her painterly vision encompasses fascination with human nature, concerns with ecological disasters, and symbolic messages of ancestral folklore and mythology. Tatjana Hutinec has been exhibiting her artwork at galleries and events in Croatia and Canada. Hutinec studied art and design in Zagreb, Croatia. Displaced due to the war in Croatia in 1990, Tatjana found opportunities for work in Toronto’s film and theatre industry sculpting and painting fantasy and special effects costumes and sets. She also taught art workshops at schools and communities funded by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Art Council. Public art commissions include sculptures for Luminato at Harbourfront and paintings for the City of Toronto’s Street` Art program. Her work has been featured on TV (CBC, OMNI), in newspaper editorials (Toronto Star, Vecernji list-Zagreb) and in books (Contemporary Ceramics in Croatia). |
