FRACTURED IN FLUX New Paintings by Estelle Vilensky
Gallery 1313 June 6-17 1313 Queen St. West
As a contemporary artist with over 20 years of experience in drawing and painting, it is not surprising that when my t.v. cable broke, the chaotic mess on the screen stirred my imagination and I became a huntress of chaotic interference. I could not “catch” the exact image twice. If I let it go, it was gone.
In this series, the disintegrating images represent for me, a metaphor for the human condition. We are all moving towards death, but we try to save the positive memories and experiences along the way. People figure prominently in this series. Screen interference makes the “real” people become artificialor machine-like. They are the faces of our culture that represent the common person. The chaotic interference causes a shift in perception where the viewer must fill in the blanks. The viewer must look harder at this work to make sense of it. There are therefore, endless interpretations.
As a painter, I could see correlations between the broken digital images and many art movements from art history. This series was born from the hope that I could translate the artistic value of chaotic interference and that my translation and transformation of it would resonate with others.
