Transcendent explores the complex and mediated relationships between humans and nature within the contemporary context. Through experimental and traditional painting techniques, seemingly opposing elements are merged and incongruous colours employed to reinterpret mythic and gendered representations of the wilderness. The familiar narratives of man vs. nature and predator vs. prey are explored though positioning the “primal” and “civilized” as equals, companions, or hybrid organisms. These reclaimed representations position humans not as alienated from, nor dominant over the natural, but immersed within it.
