RED: The Colour of Life by Judith Donoahue

February 3 – February 14

Cell Gallery, Gallery 1313

Artist Statement:

Red speaks for itself: it is the colour of love, fire, blood, birth, courage and bravery,

as well as anger and destructive rage; red foods sustain life…apples, grapes, beets,

cranberries, to name just a few; red soothes the soul in brilliant sunsets; and think of

the planet Mars (Earthʼs future?), power neckties, lipstick, and the many religious and

mythic symbols associated with red. Redʼs direct opposite is green, the colour of

growth and renewal, and of the symbolic space between life and death.

Red is complex. It makes us think about what to do next; in its benign forms it is lively,

warm, and energizing; it occupies a space without asking anyone to leave the room,

just to get on with living life fully.
