TORONTO, ON: On June 26, students from the First Nation, Métis & Inuit Secondary School Pilot Project
showcase their artwork at Gallery 1313. Between Tradition & Concrete: Indigenizing Resistance through Art is made possible through our partnership with the Indigenous Visual Culture Program at OCAD University.
Eight young First Nations & Métis artists move their work beyond the classroom, beyond school structure, and share their vision with the larger Toronto community. Educator Louise Azzarello states,“Engaging students in these real life opportunities is a way towards transforming the educational systemand creating relevant and meaningful experiences for youth.”
Student works presented in this art exhibition are products of in-class assignments and pieces inspired by workshops with artists: J’net AyAy Qwa Yak Sheelth, Vanessa Dion Fletcher, Susan Fitzmaurice, Mahlikah Awe:ri, Veronica Johnny, Nyle Johnston and Beth Kotierk.
Themes explored in the show include Identity, Representation, and Resistance. Through digital collage, photography, film and painting, students express an understanding of their place in the world and allow the audience to see the world through their eyes.
The First Nation, Métis and Inuit Secondary School Project is a pilot project offered by the TDSB Aboriginal Education Centre. Students earn credits in a holistic framework that supports and encourages Aboriginal students and their cultures. The program includes Arts/Media Studies and Food & Nutrition courses, with Aboriginal perspectives infused throughout.
We invite you to attend the opening of Between Tradition & Concrete: Indigenizing Resistance through Art at Gallery 1313 on June 26. There will be a celebration from 7-10 pm with a traditional opening given by Ed Sackaney. Donna Quan, Director of Education, TDSB, will offer a few words. Staff and students will share reflections on the workshops, creating these artworks and putting together this exhibition.
