Toronto artist Evan Steenson will be presenting a series of 12 recent works on paper which combine the visual vocabulary of gestural abstraction with micro-fiction narratives.
Referencing the expressionist abstraction of high Modernism and the shared experiences of adolescent life, TV crime dramas and adult neuroses, these works function not to depict an event but rather the viewers alienation from that event. Steenson’s exhibition constructs an interrelated web of dissonance between the viewer, their expectations, and the art.
Through a forthright juxtaposition of the rational/irrational, controlled/uncontrolled/ static/dynamic visual elements of typography and visual abstraction, THIS raises important questions about context and meaning in contemporary art practice.
About the artist
Evan Steenson is an emerging Canadian conceptual artist who works in painting, mixed media and digital media. He is a member of the 1313 Gallery and lives and works in Toronto.
