Toronto Three painters – Catharine Somerville, Ramon Serrano and Christopher Baker – have all collaborated to embrace their own personal ideas of what “landscape” means.
Catharine says, “I live and work in both Canada and the UK and have established strong links with Christopher and Ramon. Although they have never physically met, we have all communicated our thoughts and ideas, remotely through technology and by me visiting each studio. All of us have been touched by Canada’s belief in freedoms, diversity, and respect for individuals.”
Christopher Baker lives in England and has painted extensively in Canada, including Toronto Islands. Cuban-born Ramon found refuge at Artscape Gibraltar Point, on Toronto Islands, and now has immigrated with his family to Canada. “Landscape is an enchantment that tips on many interpretations – the physical space and the experience of being on the land; and the psychological space that decides our gaze. Standpoint looks at a painterly language built by coming at the physical experience of being in an unlimited expanse of the universe, beyond our control and inseparable from our history.”
