Changing Lanes is a collection of abstracted urban landscape oil paintings documenting scenes from Parkdale and West End Toronto. Inspired by my own photographs of lanes, alleyways, store fronts, towers, and signage throughout the city, many of these pieces were created at the Gladstone House, during my 3-month artist’s residency from Oct-Dec 2025.
In the spirit of Psychogeography, which explores how urban landscapes shape our behaviours and emotions, I am inspired by the connection I have to this part of the city, a place full of contrasts, and my home for over 50 years now.
In my feature piece, West Lodge Portal, and in many of my other paintings, I explore the tension between abstraction and representation. Smaller painting capture more detail and become a meditation, while in others I strive to capture light and depth in a looser and more intuitive and gestural way.
