Erin Williamson – Pink SOCK – July 3 – 14

Cell Gallery

This might sound like colorful footwear, which it can be, but for our purposes here, it’s a slang term used to describe the appearance of anorectal tissue protruding from the rectum, a condition known as ‘rectal prolapse’. In laymen’s terms, the butt-hole sort of turns inside out.

Erin Williamson is a Toronto-based sculptor from Whitevale, Ontario with a focus in found object and textile-based installation. She chooses her materials carefully to create abstract representations of the human and animal form, expressing a sense of softness and security while also interacting with the idea of self-repulsion.

Her current series of work Pink Sock involves abstracting animal forms, with focus on the “inside” and giving this naturally gory imagery a sense of softness and delicacy. By combining natural elements such as pelts and bones with soft textiles and pink wax forms, she represents the notion of mortality and its ugliness in the most lighthearted way.
