Artist Statement
This series of paintings, “Jazz Musicians”, was inspired by my January, 2017, Jazz Safari to Cuba and my July, 2017, travel to the International Umbra Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy. Both trips were sponsored by Jazz FM.91.
My husband photographed the musicians preforming at the nightly concerts. I selected, edited and cropped these photos to create appealing compositions which I then used as references for my oil paintings. The preforming artists depicted in this exhibition are Cuban, Italian and Canadian. You may recognize some of them.
This series ties into my larger body of work which focuses on the human form, expression and gesture as observed in various aspects of life. I delight in making these figures come alive in oil on my canvas.
