Making and Unmaking Selves
March 6 – March 16
Opening: Thursday, March 6th from 7 – 10 pm
Brennyn Bauer, Catalina Gonzalez, Charlie Moynes, Samantha Rodrigues and Diana Ho Ching Sze
Presenting the work of five Toronto-based artists whose intersecting practices explore a nuanced view of figuration and the formation of identity. Mediated by an analysis of personal histories, each artist brings a unique aesthetic and process to the examination of the inner workings of the self in relation to the exterior world. Whether by means of celebrity culture, the home, the body, or the experience of immigration, each artist seeks to find a way to navigate the gap between the self and the other. The figure is presented in diverse forms throughout the works – by physical impression, representation, or by the hand of the artist. The negotiation of presence and absence can be traced through each distinct practice. Through the various works presented the artists look at how our perceptions and projections of self are formed, informed and altered.
