Marina Stojkovic lives and works as an artist in Toronto, but she was born in Belgrade. Her artistic practice is a visual depiction of the diasporic affect with a focus on inter-subjectivity; the shared transience in a lived, human experience. To adapt, we must navigate between the limitations of imposed cultural standards and what others define as tangible. In Marina’s artwork, she employs transient objects, lost or abandoned, which become the subject and metaphor for diasporic themes and re-invented narratives.
Overall, her pieces evoke a form of uncomfortable nostalgia – a dreamlike state, where human forms become one and separate, depicting the surrealism of the human condition. Her work is made within the realm of installation, oil painting, canvas drawings, found objects and wood panel. She also applies her process in other fields, such as silverwork, fashion, and ceramics.

Exploring embodied experience, Marina transfers her energy into a unique gesture that gives breath to linear contours and weighted flesh to painted figures.
These bodies analyze a spectrum of emotion and circumstance, a representation of the artist’s own form while simultaneously offering themselves up as vessels for the viewer to inhabit. Each work harnesses the raw emotive response of a life shared in all of its dualities, both simple and complex. Colour and texture bring a tangible quality to ephemeral concepts such as time and space and trace the journeys of a unified consciousness.
